Wincanton Racecourse

Wincanton Racecourse

Wincanton Racecourse is a famous horseracing venue that is located in Wincanton in Somerset County England. This racecourse is renowned for its thoroughbred horse racing. The racecourse has steeplechase fences that are quite large in size. These fences tax the character of the racehorse and they are placed quite close to each other in the latter part of the course. The way the fences are placed ensures an exciting race. Racehorses will find it difficult to negotiate the fences and only the very best ones will come out on top. In fact, there have been numerous close finishes.

Wincanton Racecourse is home to a number of interesting races including the well-known Kingwell Hurdle, which is held in the month of February. The CGA Chase, which was earlier called the Jim Ford Challenge Cup, is also held on the same day as the Kingwell Hurdle race. These two races play a very important role for other major racing events like the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Champions Hurdle.

The track itself is located in very close proximity to Paul Nicholls’ yard. Another notable feature of this racecourse is its propensity to cause casualties. Nine horses have died racing at this racecourse, which also holds the dubious distinction of having the second highest casualty rate in the country.

The track is a relatively sharp course that stretches for a mile and a half and each circuit contains nine fences. The course is also very flat and is a galloping right-handed course with a relatively easy finish. The difficulty of negotiating the fences is average.

Wincanton Racecourse is believed to be among the first racecourses to hold steeplechases. For many years the racecourse hosted matches featuring hunting people. At the dawn of the nineteenth century, Easter Monday at this racecourse became a very important fixture.

At that time the course was located at Hatherleigh Farm, which lies to the southwest of the town of Wincanton. Later, in 1925 the course was relocated to its present location at Kingwell Farm. The bottom line is that Wincanton Racecourse is a truly lovely racecourse that has a lot of history behind it.
