Leicester Racecourse is a horse-racing course found in Oadby, Leicestershire in England. The race track in the Leicester Racecourse is oval in shape and spans to about 2 miles. Leicester Racecourse holds the two types British horse racing events; Flat racing where the horses run in an unobstructed distance and National Hunt where horses race over fences and hurdles. The Leicester racecourse is right handed dual Flat and Hunt track in nature.
The flat course has an oval circuit which is a mile long coupled with five furlongs each with a furlong run-in. Leicester Racecourse has a straight mile course favouring low numbers. The National Hunt Course is rectangular shaped with the last three furlongs all placing emphasis on stamina. Before the 2009/2010 National Hunt Season, the open ditch which used to be jumped as the fourth last fence was transferred to the home straight.
The home straight now has four fences and the open ditch is taken as the third fence. The Leicester Racecourse rose to the peak in the late nineteenth century when it hosted the most valuable races in the United Kingdom such as the Portland Stakes and the Prince of Wales Stakes. The two races had prize money that was greater than any prize money that had been awarded in any of the five British Classic Races in 1889.
