Kempton Racecourse

Kempton Racecouse

Kempton racecourse is based in Sunbury-on-Thames,Surrey just 16miles from London and hosts both jumps and flats.Kempton is an all-weather track, as a matter of fact,it’s the only right-handed all- weather track in the UK.The flat racing is usually all year round because it is on all weather. It has two tracks including a poly track surface for all weather racing and a turf course for national hunt fixtures. Both tracks are quite sharp and horses need to be very quick to take advantage. It is not only London’s premier racecourse but also one of the busiest racecourses in Europe.

Henry Hyde (a 19th century business man and conservative party agent) immediately bought the park when it was put on sale as he thought it would make a perfect racecourse. After six years of hard work, the new racecourse was complete and on the eighteenth of July 1878, the fast flat race was staged in front of a large enthusiastic crowd. In early 20th century another national hunt course race was added and following the introduction of King George IV chase in 1937, its importance immensely skyrocketed. In 2005, flat racing on turf ended replacing it with grass circuits in 2006.

Currently, Kempton stages seventy two days of all-weather flat racing and seven days of top quality national hunt racing. The highlights of Kempton horse racing is Grade I King George IV chase which is held every boxing day as part of William Hill Winter Festival.
