Let’s talk about the famous Belmont horse race. Belmont stakes is an American grade one stakes Thoroughbred horse race which is held every June at Belmont Park. It is a 1.5 miles horse race which is open to three year old Thoroughbreds. It is among the top attended Thoroughbred races among the America races.

Horse racing is one of the most ancient sport of all sports and its most basic goal is identifying which horse, among a number of horses, is the fastest over a set course of distance. Countries have developed their own particular horse racing traditions. Some of them include restricting races to specific breeds, running over different distances, running over obstacles, running in different gaits and running on different terraces.

Despite horses being raced purely for sports, most are the times when the racing interests are and economic importance lie in the gambling associated with it. There are various categories of horse racing which include;

· Flat racing-where horses directly gallop between two points around a straight oval track.

· National Hunt racing- horses race over obstacles.

· Haerness racing- horses pace while dragging a driver in a sulky.

· Endurance racing- Horses journey across country over anextreme distance ranging from 25 to 100 miles.

In the United Kingdom, horse racing is the largest spectator sport, and among the longest established. It is a great contributor of the British economy, generating over 3.7 billion pounds for its economy.
They are fond of the Flat racing and the National Hunt racing. These are run under the rules of governing and regulatory body for horse racing in the United Kingdom, British Horseracing Authority. There are various racecourses in the UK and each course has specific idiosyncrasies and some tracks suit horses more than others hence the phrase orses for courses’.

The Belmont stakes has been nicknamed he test of the champion’ or he run for the carnations’ since the winning horse is draped with a blanket of white carnations after the race, similar to the blanket of roses and black-eyed Susan’s for the Derby and Preakness, respectively. The owner of the winning horse, is ceremoniously presented with the winner’s trophy which is silver, designed by Paudling Farnham for Tiffany and co.

Belmont was first opened on 4th May 1905, and it is open for racing through May and June into late July, and later from end September through late October. Racing in this park is conducted in two annual meetings the spring-summer meeting which mostly begins on the second Wednesday of May and lasts through the fourth Saturday of July. This is followed by a fall meeting starting on the Friday after Labor Day and ending on the fourth Saturday in October.

Horse racing is a fun and enjoyable sport to watch. Belmontfor the third time in four years will play host to a Triple Crown when American Pharaoh attempts to add the 147th of the running grade 1, $ 1.5 million on June 6; the final and most important part of the series. Do not let this slip! Belmont makes a great deal of money from these races and they also have a park where the fans can view the horses that participate in the competition. It is one of the oldest and besides horse racing it is also a ground for other sports.
